You may have heard of cake smash sessions but you may not know exactly what they are or what to expect from your session. Let me give you an insight into a typical session at Jan Sweeney Photography.
Cake smash sessions originate from America and are the perfect way to celebrate your little ones first birthday. Let me create bright, colourful and fun images which will be the perfect record of the special time. You can choose a package to suit your needs and you don’t have to make this decision until you have seen the finished images. To book, all you have to do is pay a £75 deposit which comes off your final balance. Packages start from £245. When you book, you will also choose one of the below backdrops for the session. Which one is your favourite? It’s a difficult decision! Caroline’s Cakes in Chapel Allerton supply the cake which is included in the price and will be specially made to match the backdrop. They are DELICIOUS! I will also supply an outfit to match the backdrop, unless of course, you want to bring your own.
Backdrops from Photography Props and Drops
At the start of the session, before the cake appears, I will take some adorable images of your little one against the backdrop, in their cute little outfit! Then, we bring out the cake! Believe it or not, little ones may be a little unsure at first! After all, they probably haven’e been allowed access to a full cake before! Don’t worry though, with lots of encouragement, they will get stuck in. It can be a good idea to bring their favourite snack to bury in the cake to encourage the interaction. I have found that raisin and chocolate buttons seem to work well. I will snap away while you help to make them smile, and encourage them to get messy! They will get bored quickly and as soon as I pick up on this, I will clean away the mess in preparation for the splash session! I will bring out my gorgeous little mini bath and fill it with some lovely warm water and some of their favourite bubble bath, and let them have a little birthday splash, while I capture the cutest images. And then, you’re done!! Just in time for them to leave for a big nap – it’s hard work celebrating your birthday!
I hope this has answered some of your questions but I have added a few Frequently Asked Questions below:
Where will the session take place?
In my log cabin garden studio in Moortown, Leeds
How long does the session last?
The session will last for around 60-90 minutes.
What do I need to bring for the session?
All you need to bring is your changing bag, a towel, your little ones usual bubble bath and their favourite teddy/toy if they have one
Can you accommodate various dietary needs?
Of course! Caroline from Caroline’s Cakes is amazing and will be able to cater for your needs.
Can we choose the time of the session as my little one naps and will grumpy if they haven’t slept?
Absolutely! You choose the day and time that suits you when you book.
What if my little one doesn’t get stuck in?
This happens a lot initially. I am prepared for it with a repertoire of funny songs, faces and fake sneezes! As mentioned above, I always advise bringing some snacks with you to tuck into the cake to encourage your little one to get smashing!
