NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION AT JAN SWEENEY PHOTOGRAPHY
Now that the news has sunk in and the excitement is building about meeting your new baby, it is time to think about booking your Newborn Photography Session. I imagine you have many questions about what this is, what is involves etc, so grab a cuppa, and let me help….
WHEN SHOULD I BOOK A NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION
I advise booking your session any time after your 20 week scan. I reserve a set number of Newborn Photography Sessions a month and suggest clients book their session for around a week after their due date. Naturally, babies don’t always appear when we think they will but that is no problem. As I only take one a certain number of sessions, I can amend the session date and time, as required.
It breaks my heart to turn clients away and this can often be the case if clients don’t book their session until baby arrives.
HOW OLD SHOULD MY BABY BE?
I advise that baby is less than 14 days for their session. The reason for this is that they are at their most sleepy during this time. Soundly sleeping babies don’t mind being moved around, being gently posed and having no clothes on.
Having said this, if the global pandemic has taught me anything, it is that sometimes we have no control over timescales. I have done plenty of ‘older newborn’ sessions and you will still get stunning images to treasure. Baby may be more alert during the session but who doesn’t love images of a wide eyed, beautiful baby?
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING TO THE SESSION
A good supply of nappies, wipes and milk are essential. It wouldn’t be a Newborn Photography Session if there wasn’t lots of pee and poop! Sometimes we are lucky and this can be caught in a nappy but most of the time, this is on me, my props, Mummy, Daddy….it doesn’t bother me one little bit son don’t panic. The sessions do tend to make baby want more comfort which is perfectly normal as there is a lot going on. Please do not think I will judge the way you feed your baby. I completely understand the stresses involved with feeding a newborn so I will not be judging anything you are doing, I will more than likely be planning the next shot in my head or tidying props away.
Aside from that, I have everything for the session (I even have spare nappies and wipes). For a lot of the session, baby is naked or swaddled. I also have some cute little rompers specifically designed for Newborn Photography Sessions.
If you wish to bring any special keepsakes, teddies, you are more than welcome to do so and I will try my best to include them.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE SESSION
The session starts by making you feel welcome and relaxed with a hot cuppa and some sweet treats (when restrictions allow this again). I will invite you to strip baby down to their nappy, wrap them in a blanket and feed if required.
Most of the time, we do get to a stage where baby is naked but I make sure they are nice and settled before this happens. My studio is toasty warm (I always advise parents to wear loose, light and comfortable clothing for this reason) and I usually start with swaddling baby in a wrap. If you have opted for parent shots, we get these done first as you can be quite sweaty by the end of the session. Sibling shots are also done at the start of the session so that one of the adults can take the sibling(s) to the local park/cafe or home, to allow the star of the show to finish their session.
If you are really adamant that you don’t want your face in any of the images, there are some stunning parent shots using your hands/arms, which make for great alternatives.
